This research study examines the role of a fictional and mystical character in Guillermo Del Torro’s movie The Shape of Water. Through the character of the amphibian fish man I have tried to associate it with the eccentric representation of a cyborg by literary critic Donna Harraway. This “fish man” debunks the three essential differences that would classify it under any specific societal affiliation. The differences are between human and animal, human/ animal and machine, physical and non physical. Harraway’s cyborg calls for a non essentialized, genderless understanding of identity. In the movie we see that all the main characters are those that have been either disenfranchised or sidelined in the early 1990s America. The story has been narrated as an anecdote to the audience. The so called “others” of the society have taken up the task of retelling their versions of the story. This is what cyborg writing is about i.e. the power to survive by seizing the tools to mark the world that marked them as “other”.
Keywords:
Cyborg, debunking of societal boundaries, non- essentialized and genderless identity, other.
