Abstract:
Background: Psoriasis is a chronic, immune mediated, inflammatory and proliferative cutaneous disorder characterized by well defined, erythematous, scaly, indurated plaques on extensor aspect of body and scalp. It has got a very significant deleterious effect on the quality of life (QOL). The severity of disease in psoriasis is assessed by measurement of body surface area; although there are other postulates which argue that, quality of life (QOL) would be a better method of assessing the severity of disease in psoriasis. The present study was carried out to understand the perceptions of the patients living with psoriasis in relation to their quality of life.
Materials and Methods: The Cross-sectional study was conducted on 122 patients of psoriasis irrespective of their age, type, duration, severity of the disease from January 2021 to June 2022 at a tertiary care hospital.
Results: Out of 122 patients of psoriasis; 102 were males and 20 were females with male: female ratio of 5.1:1. Mean age of onset of psoriasis in male was 42.9±16.58 years; while in female mean age of onset was a 37.2±15.41 years. Majority of the patients (22.95%) were in the age group of 31 to 40 years. Majority of the patients in the study group had disease duration of more than 5 years. Most common type of psoriasis was chronic plaque psoriasis (72.94%) followed by scalp psoriasis (9.02%), acute guttate psoriasis (6.56%), palmoplanter psoriasis (4.92%), flexural psoriasis (3.28%) pustular and erythrodermic psoriasis (1.64%). History of aggravation of psoriasis was present in various types of stress in 53.28% of the patients. Mean PASI score was 8.9±7.67in the study group.38.53% patients had mild, 25.41% had moderate and 36.06% had severe psoriasis. Mean DLQI score was 8.27±6.10 in the study group. Psoriasis had small effect on QOL in 35.25%, moderate effect in 25.41%, very large effect in 27.87% and extremely large effect in 4.92% of the patients. There was a significant correlationship between the PASI score & DLQI.
Conclusion: This study concluded that, psoriasis has got a very significant negative impact on patient’s quality of life and emphase that it is very important to evaluate the QOL in all patients of psoriasis and identify associated psychological distresses like Anxiety and Depression at the time of making therapeutic decision.
