Meena Arora Nayak’s Partition Novel About Daddy (2000) traces the anatomy of the silence of guilt about partition communal violence and its burning epicenters thereafter. It is with the second-generation women writers on partition like Meena Arora Nayak, Bapsi Sidhwa and others, a distinctive shift can be located. This paper aims to unearth the Gaps and Silences in women novelists on partition with reference to the chosen text About Daddy.
Simran Mehta (an Indian born in America), a daughter exploring the violent roots of her father in India recounts the torture, suffering, grief and humiliation he had inflicted and witnessed during partition. A sense of moral responsibility as daughter and conscious citizen-subject makes Simran internalize her father’s pain and guilt. She visits India in 1997-98 to fulfill her father’s last wish: that his ashes should be scattered on the Indo-Pakistan border as a kind of expiation for his sin of instigating communal violence and killing innocent Muslims before Partition. But she is arrested on charges of ‘terrorist on mission’. Her harrowing journey in the jail and its inmates, her disillusionment with the voluntary peace organization called CCPH and her eventual emplaning to US explore the divergent details on present day crisis of terrorism and violence.
