Abstract
Lipstick works as a corrective item comprising of shades, mineral oils, beeswax, pigments and dyes that apply desired color and shading surface to the lips. They are grouped under skin colorants which are alluded as magnificence helps in changing the appearance of skin and improving the appearance. Lipsticks also play a crucial role on crime sites by connecting it to the prime suspects in cases like rape or assault, murder, bulgary, theft. Lipsticks work as a physical evidence in criminal cases as they can be found anywhere on the site of crime may be a utensil, floor, walls, cigarette butts, clothing, on various types of paper and even on skin. The lip prints can be isolated and further used for the future analysis by studying their structure and shape or going through their genetic background by extracting DNA from the saliva left in lip prints and also by knowing the various compositions of lipstick. In present study an endeavor has been made to analyze the lipstick stain on the basis of different components present in them by both the cheapest and easy techniques-Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC) and the costly and bit tricky technique Gas chromatography (GC). Eight lipstick samples (Lakme Enrich stains, Huda Beauty matte liquid, Colors Queen, ADS, Ellwin New Fashion, Ramble Premium, Hilary Rhoda, Revlon) were taken. These samples were analyzed and compared in three different mobile phases [butanol: acetic acid: water], [acetone : ethanol : ammonium hydroxide : water], [acetone : ethanol : ammonium hydroxide : water] having four different solvents (ethanol, methanol, acetone, isopropyl alcohol in which those lipsticks were mixed. The present study was undertaken to identify the different solvents and mobile phases (TLC) which gave good separation of the lipstick stains. Lipstick stains were matched with the suspected lipstick stain for their criminal identification by studying their peaks in Gas chromatography or by analyzing their separated band having various Rf values in TLC techniques. The results showed that Isopropyl alcohol, acetone and the mobile phase- Butanol: acetic acid: water was best suited for proper separation of lipstick stains and peaks.
