Cadmium is nonessential toxic heavy metal readily available to plant roots through various sources. The two mustard varieties; Alankar and Rohini were tested in the pot experiment against two graded treatments of two different cadmium salts under prevailing climatic and soil conditions. Treatment was given in soil as CdCl2, Cd(NO3)2 or CdSO4 for concentration doses 0, 25 and 50 mg Cd per kg of soil. All the three salts affected growth negatively, more in Alankar than Rohini. The salt CdCl2 was more toxic than CdSO4 or Cd(NO3)2. Variety Alankar accumulated more Cd against the three salts. The two varieties accumulated Cd in salt dependent manner i.e. Cd(NO3)2 > CdSO4 > and CdCl2. Alternatively, the Cd toxicity manifested by two varieties was concentration and genotype dependent manner in both the species which is due to increasing accumulation of Cd salt. Cadmium 50 mg per kg has more toxic effect than 25 mg per kg where CdCl2 salt was more toxic for both the varieties. Alankar manifested more sensitive response than Rohini.
