Abstract
Srimanta Sankardeva, a prominent Assamese polymath of the 15th–16th centuries, played a pivotal role in shaping Assamese culture and literature. As the founder of the Neo-Vaishnavism movement, he initiated a profound socio-cultural transformation in Assam, fostering social cohesion and enriching the region's cultural landscape.1 His contributions spanned various domains, including art, literature, and education. However, despite his significant impact, the original traditions he championed have faced challenges in maintaining their authenticity in contemporary Assam. The Neo-Vaishnavite movement aimed to unify the Assamese people under a shared spiritual and cultural ethos, yet modern cultural practices and external influences have complicated the preservation of these traditions. The proliferation of diverse cultural practices has led to a dilution of Sankardeva's original vision. Additionally, the varied biographies of Sankardeva have contributed to a fragmented understanding of his life and work. The influence of orthodox Brahmanic culture during the Ahom kingdom's rule and the intrusion of multiculturalism have further disrupted the cultural continuity envisioned by Sankardeva. This article seeks to examine Sankardeva’s contributions critically, considering the limitations of his movement in the context of contemporary cultural dynamics. This analysis aims to highlight both the achievements and challenges of Sankardeva’s legacy in the pre sent cultural context.
