Abstract: In the shipping industry, where a lot of data is gathered to better understand and optimize logistics, emissions, energy use, and maintenance, big data is becoming more and more popular. The cost and quality of on-board sensors and data collecting systems, satellite connection, data ownership, and technical challenges to efficient collection and use of big data are some of the constraints on its utilization. The process of gathering and organizing data, notably in the field of e-navigation, may be made simpler by new protocol standards. This essay provides a summary of some of these problems and potential fixes.
