Abstract
The post-2016 phase in India’s financial landscape, marked by the integration of the Jan Dhan-Aadhaar-Mobile (JAM) trinity, catalyzed unprecedented formal credit access for previously underserved populations. Among the most prominent beneficiaries has been a growing segment of New-to-Credit (NTC) borrowers, predominantly young, urban, and digitally engaged individuals who entered the formal lending ecosystem for the first time. This study, titled “A Study of Credit Behavior, Financial Discipline, and Awareness Among New-to-Credit (NTC) Borrowers in India”, examines the behavioral patterns, repayment discipline, and financial awareness levels of NTC consumers, leveraging secondary data sources up to 2021. Using a descriptive-analytical framework, the research explores how first-time borrowers interact with unsecured credit products such as credit cards, BNPL schemes, and digital personal loans. Key focus areas include repayment consistency, credit utilization trends, early-stage delinquency risks, and the role of digital onboarding in shaping initial borrower experiences. The study reveals that while a majority of NTC borrowers demonstrate strong intent and adoption of digital credit, a sizable portion lacks awareness of core financial concepts, such as interest compounding, credit scoring, and repayment obligations. Misunderstandings often lead to early defaults and long-term creditworthiness challenges. Institutional actors, including credit bureaus, fintech lenders, and regulatory bodies like RBI and SEBI, play a critical role in enabling access, yet ecosystem gaps remain. These include limited handholding, weak grievance redressal, and over-reliance on traditional credit scores. Based on these findings, the paper recommends tailored onboarding, embedded credit education, and the use of alternative risk assessment models to sustain responsible borrowing. The study contributes to a largely under-researched area in academic and policy discourse, offering actionable insights for financial institutions, regulators, and inclusion-focused stakeholders. Future research could explore post-2021 trends such as UPI-linked sachet loans, BNPL innovations, and gender-specific credit trajectories.
