Abstract: A comparative study was carried out on morphological and physical characteristics of four commonly found mango varieties (Neelum, Rumani, Banganapalle and Alphonso) procured from Puducherry, with a newly identified genotype of Mangifera indica OM125272 from Mathur village (Tamil Nadu) near Puducherry. The main ideology of this study was to acquire characteristics information on OM125272 mango variety. The morphological study was conducted for fruit length, width, weight and its pulp weight and texture, along with the intensity of Anthocyanin pigmentation. The physical characteristics such as fruit shape, cross sectional shape, peel texture, density of lenticles, presence of cavity stalk, sinus and neck, average stone length, width and weight, along with leaf blade characteristics. On the basis of ascertained data, the discrepancies in morphological and physical characters of OM125272 when compared with other mango varieties may be due to intrinsic nature of plant varieties and the predominant climatic as well as soil conditions that presides in the vicinity of Puducherry.
