Foreign Direct Investment means the transfer of capital, technology and other skills like managerial, marketing and accounting expertise and practices. It can take place in the form of establishing new business operations from acquiring existing business assets in the other countries including mergers and acquisitions. Tourism sector has emerged as one of the key services sectors enabling growth worldwide. It has significantly contributed towards socio-economic progress through employment generation, foreign exchange earnings and infrastructure development. It can also play an important role in achieving growth with equality and sustainability. In this paper; I have an attempt to study the Foreign Direct Investment trends in the tourism sector in recent years and its effect on the Indian economy and potential of Foreign Direct Investment in the tourism sector for removing regional disparities.
