Abstract: Soil contamination refers to the presence of toxic chemicals (pollutants or contaminants) in soil, in high enough concentrations to pose a risk to human health and/or the ecosystem. Such contaminants include metals, inorganic ions and salts, and many organic compounds. When the amount of soil contaminants exceeds natural levels, pollution is generated. Moreover, contamination in soil of any kind can bring variations in its bearing capacity. The lower strength of soil may directly lead to collapsing of various structures established on it. Thus the effect of contamination on the shear strength of soil has always been an important concern for geotechnical engineers. This paper determines the effect of contamination (particularly sulfates, nitrates, and phosphates) on the shear strength of the soil. For the research purpose, the sewage soil on the banks of the Shahdara drain is selected. Different tests including proctor test, dry density test, Atterberg limits test, and direct shear test are performed on the selected soil samples along with uncontaminated soil samples for comparison purposes. The results are then compared on graphs. The uncontaminated was found to have greater max. dry density, liquid limit, cohesion, internal angle of friction, etc. The concentration of sulfates, phosphates, and nitrates is also determined using chemical analysis methods for both contaminated and uncontaminated samples. Specific gravity, shrinkage limit, and plastic limit of soil samples are also determined.
Keywords: Shear strength of soil, chemical analysis of soil ,soil index properties.
