Films have evolved as a powerful art form, a source of popular entertainment and a powerful method too for sensitizing citizens. Interpretation or reading of a film is a full-fledged discipline in itself. As a discipline, Cinema Studies is extremely inter-disciplinary and it draws on the contents and methods of literature, history, sociology, political science and economics among others. The culture and society provide a base and background serving as the pillars, on which these theories are formed. A good film can creates awareness among people by raising local to global issues. They can educate about cultures and give a broader view about political, religious, social context .The issues of socio-political, economic, cultural life. The arrival of Subaltern Studies and Culture Studies and the recent shift in emphasis from conventional historiography to new methods, specifically using film as a source of information, has drawn scholarly attention to Indian Cinema. Now a days scholars from varied disciplines are engaged in studying cinema. So in this paper an attempt will be made to discuss the history of Indian Cinema.
