Austenitic stainless steel 316L is a broadly utilized stainless steel in the chemical industry, biomedical devices, and marine systems because of the good resistance to corrosion. It may however lose its performance in aggressive environment especially that which contains chlorides as well as acids. The conventional corrosion inhibitors are effective but are very toxic to the environment and to the health of the individuals. However, the recently developed green corrosion inhibitors based on plant extracts are a sustainable and eco-friendly alternative. These inhibitors contain high concentration of bioactive organic compounds like flavonoids, tannins, alkaloids and saponins which adsorb on the metal surfaces thus forming protective films which delay the corrosion process. The review article discusses the mechanism of corrosion in 316L stainless steel, the type of green inhibitor along with their adsorption behavior, and the efficacy of different plant-based compounds. Adsorption models: The adsorption models are mentioned to explain the process of inhibition, especially the Langmuir isotherm. Other difficulties mentioned in the article are less extract composition consistency, no standardization, and scarcity of long-term data. The potential future research directions are suggested, and they include standardization protocols, mechanistic studies, and field validation. This review highlights how green inhibitors can offer a sustainable route of corrosion mitigation in stainless steel, potentially.
