Abstract
Handloom sector is a major traditional industry in India. A large number of looms were in existence from the time immemorial and even during the early 19th century the factory system of handloom production existed here. The handloom sector has been slowly weakening over the years and there has been a steady decline in the industry. This industry faces a large number of problems today in spite of a very glorious past and huge potential for employment generation. Ineffective implementation of the schemes, increased unfair competition from the power loom and mill sectors are responsible for the crisis. Handloom is unparalleled in its flexibility and versatility, permitting experimentation and encouraging innovations. Concerted efforts are being made through the schemes and programme to enhance production, productivity, and efficiency of the handloom sector and enhance the working status of the weavers. In this context this paper analyses of the working conditions of the Integrated Handloom Cluster Development Scheme (IHDCS) Weavers in Andhra Pradesh.
