Abstract
This paper explores the role of microfinance in empowering women in rural India, focusing on its impact on economic, social, and personal development. Through an examination of policy interventions, institutional frameworks, and case studies, the research highlights how microfinance initiatives, such as Self-Help Groups (SHGs) and small loans, have facilitated rural women’s access to credit, improved their financial independence, and promoted entrepreneurship. The study also discusses the significant role of government policies like the National Rural Livelihood Mission (NRLM), which has extended microfinance services to millions of rural women. However, challenges such as over-indebtedness, high-interest rates, and limited financial literacy continue to affect the efficacy of microfinance in promoting long-term empowerment. The paper further analyses the qualitative and quantitative outcomes of microfinance on women’s income, decision-making roles, and participation in community governance. In conclusion, while microfinance has made substantial progress in empowering rural women, it requires continued policy support, regulatory reforms, and the adoption of digital financial services to maximize its potential. The study emphasizes the need for comprehensive strategies, including financial education and support systems, to ensure sustainable and inclusive empowerment of women in rural India.
