Title: The Mean Body Mass Index among Reproductive-Age Women (15 to 49 Years) in Nepal: A Study on Disparities and Influencing Factors
Abstract:
This study aimed to investigate the mean Body Mass Index (BMI) among reproductive-age women (15 to 49 years) in Nepal and explore potential disparities across various subgroups based on age, education level, residence, and other relevant factors. The study utilized data from the Demographic and Health Survey (DHS) and employed descriptive statistics, mean comparison, ANOVA, and regression analyses to address the research questions. The findings revealed significant associations between BMI and age, education level, wealth index, employment status, and residence. The adjusted regression model explained 23.37% of the variation in BMI and highlighted the importance of residence, age, wealth index, education, and occupation in explaining BMI differences. Policy implications included targeted nutrition and health promotion programs, anti-poverty measures, education and empowerment initiatives, reproductive health policies, and a health equity approach.
Objectives:
Determine the average BMI of reproductive-age women (15 to 49 years) in Nepal and examine potential disparities across subgroups based on age, education level, residence, and other factors.
Methodology:
This study utilized data from the Demographic and Health Survey (DHS) in Nepal, focusing on reproductive-age women aged 15 to 49 years. Descriptive statistics were used to calculate the mean BMI for the sample. Mean comparisons were conducted to assess disparities across different subgroups. ANOVA was employed to examine the relationship between age and BMI, and regression analysis was used to identify factors associated with BMI. The statistical analyses considered the complex sampling design of the DHS survey by utilizing sampling weights. Missing data were handled using appropriate imputation techniques.
Conclusion:
The study found significant associations between BMI and various factors among reproductive-age women in Nepal. Age, education level, wealth index, employment status, and residence were identified as significant predictors of BMI. Older age, higher wealth index, primary and secondary education, and urban residence were associated with higher BMIs. The number of living children had a varying effect on BMI. The adjusted regression model accounted for 23.37% of the variation in BMI and highlighted the importance of residence, age, wealth index, education, and occupation in explaining BMI differences.
Based on the findings, targeted nutrition and health promotion programs, anti-poverty measures, education and empowerment initiatives, reproductive health policies, and a health equity approach were recommended as policy interventions. These measures can contribute to improving the health and well-being of reproductive-age women in Nepal and addressing BMI disparities based on demographic and socioeconomic factors.
